Gravity fed fuel systems on motor vehicles are safest when the fuel flow is in the total command of the operator. With the stock Concours petcock this is not possible since it is configured to be opened automatically by manifold vacuum once the engine is started. This design has shown itself to be vulnerable
to incomplete fuel shutoff at engine shutdown due to contaminates or debris in the fuel system. This can cause unauthorized fuel flow to the carburetors resulting in the potential for major engine damage.
As luck would have it, the fuel flow passages cast into the petcock
handle will allow full manual control of fuel flow if the petcock
handle is simply inverted and reinstalled. Interference with the
bottom surface of the tank prevents this mounting unless the handle
is modified and the Manual Petcock Conversion handle is installed.
